A recent report indicates that Apple has initiated discussions with Sony to facilitate the integration of handheld game controller support. Along with an anticipated increase in game offerings, for the Apple Vision Pro. Bloomberg reports that an upcoming visionOS update will introduce support for third-party hand controllers, including Sony’s PlayStation VR2 controllers.

Additionally, Apple has been in contact with various third-party developers to encourage the development of more games for the Apple VR. With the inclusion of controller support serving as an incentive. The Apple Vision Pro currently supports traditional game controllers from Xbox and PlayStation, but this feature is limited to playing games on Apple Arcade.

The introduction of VR controller support, coupled with efforts to motivate developers to create additional VR games for the platform. This could significantly enhance the sales potential of Apple’s headset. Furthermore, incorporating hand controllers may complement Apple’s existing eye-and-hand movement detection technology, fostering greater interest in game and application development. Bloomberg has also suggested that Apple consider providing financial support for additional programs to generate increased traction for Vision Pro.

The Apple Vision Pro has experienced modest sales. This is not surprising given that it represents a completely new product category lacking a well-established market. Apple has reportedly sold around 370,000 units in the first three-quarters of its sales and expects to sell an additional 50,000 units by the end of 2024.

More significantly, users of the Vision Pro are not utilizing the device as frequently as the company had anticipated. It highlights the necessity for enhanced software offerings. Until recently, Apple had concentrated on developing its own “wand” controller, akin to the Apple Pencil, to facilitate more precise tasks. However, the company now recognizes the potential benefits of integrating VR hand controllers into the platform.
